then be vacant and the salary subject to whatever scale may

be fixed for Government clerks generally.

16.

Overseers. There are two vacancies at present in

this branch owing to the retirement of Mr. Marande and the

death of Mr. Cronan. When these vacancies are filled up

there will be two more overseers than the minimum number I

consider permanently necessary. I propose when arrangements

can be made for one to reside in the Hill District to dis-

pense with the services of Mr. Nimo, and the other one I

consider necessary for the present in view of the Extraor-

dinary Public Works that will I anticipate be in hand next

year.

17.

Assistant Fore...an. One vacancy has recently occur.

red owing to the dismissal of Mr. Cotta which I do not pro-

poseto fill. This reduces the number to the minimum require-

ments.

18.

Water Works. When opportunity occurs I propose to

aispense with the services of two turncocks, thus recucing

this branch to the minimum.

19. .

Telegraphs. On the retirement of Mr. Silva I pro-

pose to abolish the office of Electrician placing all the telegraphs and telephones in charge of one of the Executive

Engineers.

20.

Disinfector. When opportunity occurs I propose to aispense with the services of an Engineer and place the maintenance of the boiler and machinery under one of the Overseers of Water Works who looks after the pumping machi-

nery
